This beautiful antique southern French Walnut Oil Jug which dates from the 18th century is handmade of Terracotta and has an amazing green glazed outer.
This fabulous jug which is a large size and is a rare three handled design has a pinched pouring spout, vertical patterned raised bands to its body, a wonderful patina built up over the many years of storing oil and is a stunning example.
These jugs were originally used to store and preserve nut oils and olive oil and were sometimes hung by the two side handles with the 3rd handle being used to tip up the jar to pour. They were also sometimes dug into the ground to store. Walnuts were very popular in France in the 18th century. Most households had their own walnut tree and used the oil for cooking and also lighting.
